NC Poll Shows Strong Support for Massive Tax Reform

North Carolina today released the results of a new Tarrance Group poll showing that North Carolinians strongly support reforming the state tax code along the lines of the proposed Senate plan.  AFP did not poll the exact Senate plan but a similar plan with similar principles.

“North Carolinians recognize that it’s time to reform our outdated, depression-era tax code. The results of our poll shows wide support for tax reform that leaves North Carolina families with more take-home pay and makes it easier for businesses to invest and create jobs,” said Dallas Woodhouse, State Director of Americans for Prosperity-North Carolina. “The poll results show a clear desire for bold tax relief and reform that gets North Carolina back in the game for jobs and business.”

Key findings include:

• Two-thirds of voters (68%) say North Carolina’s tax code is in need of reform
• A plurality (49%) favor fundamental tax reform that includes:
  • Immediately lowering the state personal income tax to a flat 5 percent, and completely eliminating the personal income tax within 4 years.
  • Lowering the corporate tax rate to a flat 5 percent.
  • Lowering the sales tax rate, while broadening the sales tax to all services, including those that are not currently taxed such as haircuts and labor for auto repairs.
  • Eliminating all state income tax deductions and credits, such as the home mortgage interest deduction, the child tax credit, and exemptions for non-profits like churches.  All federal tax deductions would remain.
• A majority of voters (55%) including 58% of conservative, swing Democrats, say they would be more likely to vote for a Representative who supported such a proposal (compared to only 27% less likely).

Recently AFP-NC announced a $500,000 citizen-led, grassroots effort to reform North Carolina’s tax code. Citing the need to cut taxes, spur economic development, and reform North Carolina’s depression-era tax code, AFP-NC announced a massive grassroots issue effort that urged lawmakers to be bold and get North Carolina “Back in the Game” when it comes to tax relief and reform.
