Stigma of Mental Illness Poignantly Addressed by Oscar Winner Jennifer Lawrence

Using her star power in front of the cameras to bring an awareness and change perceptions on a key issue that affects Fort Bragg's military community.

The families and soldiers in the military community are all too familiar with the daunting issue of mental illness. The issue is a top priority at Fort Bragg with numbers and cases escalating.

It's not often when Hollywood comes to the rescue taking a stand for issues that affect our servicemembers, but that's just what this year's 'Best Actress' Jennifer Lawrence did at The Oscars.

"I don't think we're going to stop until we get rid of the stigma for mental illness," Lawrence said. "I know David O. Russell won't, and I hope that this helps."

"It's just so bizarre how in this world if you have asthma, you take asthma medication. If you have diabetes, you take diabetes medication," she said. "But as soon as you have to take medicine for your mind, it's such a stigma behind it."

Lawrence was recognized for her role in David O. Russell's drama, Silver Linings Playbook, in which two troubled people find connection and stability with one another.
