If you hear a siren today in the Lake Norman area, don't freak out. It's just a test.
HUNTERSVILLE, NC -- Duke Energy is conducting a quarterly test of McGuire Nuclear Station sirens midday Wednesday to make sure they're operating properly.
The April 14 test will begin at 11:50 a.m. and will last about 10 minutes, according to Huntersville Fire.
The tests are scheduled on the second Wednesday of every quarter. Future tests are scheduled on July 14 and Oct. 13.

Pole-mounted sirens are located throughout a 10-mile radius of McGuire Nuclear Station, according to Duke Energy. They tested every quarter to ensure they are working correctly as part of normal maintenance. No public action is necessary, officials say.
If you hear sirens but aren't sure if it's just a test, authorities suggest you tune into local radio stations FM 107.9, WLNK Charlotte, FM 106.5, WEND Salisbury, or NOAA Weather Radio, or television stations for instructions on what to do.
