Juveniles Fight At Birkdale, Security Concerns Raised

While police say there has been no uptick in crime in Birkdale, several residents are asking for heightened patrols.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC — Huntersville residents are asking if Huntersville Police need to patrol Birkdale more after a video of a fight circulated from the popular shopping center.

Police say they saw the cell phone video of the fight that happened between juveniles Saturday night and say a report was filed.

"Our initial investigation has revealed this was not a random act of violence but stemmed from a previous dating relationship involving a female, and private messaging interactions via social media," police said in a statement.

Huntersville residents reacted to the news with concern.

"I'm sorry but Birkdale is most certainly experiencing an uptick in crime over the last few months. To the point I've told my kids months ago that they aren't allowed there until it is figured out," said Carrie Jenks.

"This is horrible. Birkdale has always been a fun & safe place to go to. I hope these individuals are held accountable," said Michelle Hancock.

Others asked that HPD patrol more to make sure there are no more violent incidents.

"Maybe have police officers on foot walking around instead of just driving around," said Tip Gardener.

If you witness violence or see a video, you are urged to call the Huntersville Police Department at 704-464-5400.
