Wastewater Smoke Test Underway In Huntersville

Huntersville residents may see smoke wafting out of manhole covers or their roofs over the next couple of days. Here's why.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC β€” Huntersville residents should not be alarmed if they see smoke wafting up from their rooftops or manhole covers this week, Huntersville police said Wednesday.

Charlotte Water is conducting wastewater smoke test in Huntersville neighborhoods Wednesday and Thursday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

"When you flush a toilet or use water, you expect it to go to a wastewater treatment plant. So do we," Charlotte Water said. "As part of our constant effort to reduce wastewater overflows we will inspect the wastewater pipes in your neighborhood. Crews will blow a non-toxic smoke into manholes and look for any smoke that may escape out of cracks or defects."

Here's what Charlotte Water said to expect during the tests:
"Look for a notice hung on your front door a few days before smoke testing will be on your street," it said. "Please pour a gallon of water into all floor drains and rarely used drains (showers, baths, sinks, toilets) that may be dry before we begin testing.

"Smoke should escape through vent stacks on the roof of your building – this is a sign that the building’s plumbing is properly installed. Smoke should not enter your home or business unless you have defective plumbing or dry drain traps. If smoke enters your home, don’t worry.

  • The smoke will dissipate on it’s own or you can open a window.
  • It is not harmful to people or pets.
  • It is nearly odorless, is non-toxic, and will not leave residue or create a fire hazard. "

Charlotte Water said work crews will be wearing identifying clothing and will not need to enter homes or businesses.
