Here are the top stories today in Mooresville:

1. The inaugural Mooresville Fondo charity bike ride will take place on Sept. 9, as part of Mooresville's 150th anniversary celebration. According to a press release, "The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Top of the Lake Rotary Club will receive significant proceeds from the event. Mooresville Realty [is the] presenting sponsor. The inaugural Mooresville Fondo will cater to cyclists of all skill levels, offering three distinct rides: a 25-mile route, a 50-mile route, and a 75-mile route." 2. Yesterday was the first day of school for students and staff in the Mooresville-Graded School District. It also marked the first time the doors to the new Selma Burke Middle School opened to welcome more than 600 students. (WBTV)
3. On Wednesday, Mooresville Town Commissioner Bobby Compton announced his candidacy for mayor. According to Iredell Free News, "[Compton] is a Mooresville native and retired firefighter. [He] is running against former commissioner Chris Carney in the November election. Mayor Miles Atkins decided not to seek re-election." (Iredell Free News)
