COVID Cases Reported In 34 Iredell Schools Last Week: List

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — Thousands of students were placed in quarantine in Iredell County last week as at least 286 positive cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Iredell-Statesville Schools, according to school district data.

As of Sept. 2., 260 students and 26 school district staffers tested positive for COVID-19 during the week of Aug. 27 through Sept. 2, ISS said. At least 47 of the cases were considered the result of secondary spread within schools.

More than 3,500 students and 80 staff members were in quarantine due to school or community contact, or due to having symptoms, ISS said.

The explosion in COVID-19 case and quarantine counts comes as the Iredell-Statesville Board of Education voted 4-2 in an emergency meeting last week to ditch a mask-optional policy for the district in favor of requiring masks in classes. The policy went into effect Thursday and is set to be reevaluated monthly.

As of Friday, Sept. 3, however, six ISS schools were operating virtually due to COVID: North Iredell High, West Iredell Middle, Central Elementary, Lakeshore Middle, East Iredell Middle and Scotts Elementary.

Of the students reported as out, at least 2,476 were in quarantine due to a school contact, 390 were in quarantine from a possible community contact, and 710 were isolating with COVID-19 symptoms, ISS said.

Among staff members, at least 25 were in quarantine due to a school contact, 12 were in quarantine from a possible community contact, and 43 were isolating with COVID-19 symptoms.
