- It changed the industry! In 2001, the death of Dale Earnhardt at the Daytona 500 may in fact be NASCAR’s most important moment. It forced NASCAR to take a close look at safety issues and quickly propelled the sport to make life-saving advancements. Over the past two decades racing has become safer. An example of this, is Ryan Newman's crash in the 2020 Daytona 500. The driver reportedly survived the crash, in part, due to the new safety equipment. (Toronto Star)
