Fluffy Stray Calf Found On Side Of I-77 To Be Auctioned

It's not every day you see a calf on the side of the interstate, but one brave bovine made his way close to Interstate 77 in Iredell County.

The fluffy bull calf found on the side of the interstate will be auctioned in late February, according to Iredell County animal services.

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — On Monday, a fluffy, jet black bull calf was discovered on the side of I-77 in Iredell County, with pointy ears and a cute, big nose.

The protocol in Iredell County is that its animal services unit steps in, and that's who helped apprehend the wayward livestock precariously close to one of the busiest interstates in North Carolina.

Dara St. John with animal services said she'd never seen cattle captured on the side of the road in her four years working.

"It's very uncommon," said St. John. "He's so cute."

The director of animal services says it's hard to keep track of livestock, and they aren't chipped like a common household pet.

"I've never seen a chipped cow," said Director Kristian Hernandez. "Some people will tag them or put markings on them," he explained.

But this fluffy, ebony calf had no such identifiers.

He's now set to be the star of the show at the Iredell County Livestock Auction, held Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. in Statesville, at 430 Bristol Drive.

He's an Angus bull calf, according to the director, and they expect him to be in high demand.

The high bidder at the auction will be able to pick up the calf after the sale; they ask you not to bring a trailer to the event because the parking lot is very small.
