  1. Six hundred students at the University of North Carolina banded together to show their support for gun safety on campus. In solidarity, when the campus Bell Tower rang on Wednesday, they bowed their heads in silence in honor of their slayed professor, Zijie Yan, who was shot and killed earlier in the week by a student. According to the Mooresville Tribune, "Students who spoke at the rally described hours of terror and confusion during a lockdown and police manhunt that resulted in the arrest of Tailei Qi, 34, who has been charged with first-degree murder and having a gun on educational property." 2. Did you know that Saturday, Sept. 2 is International Vulture Awareness Day? If you would like to celebrate, head over to the Carolina Raptor Center, located at 6000 Sample Road, Huntersville from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to the Carolina Raptor Center website, "There will be vulture-themed activities for all ages along the trail all day. Click here for a schedule of activities." (Carolina Raptor Center)
  3. Fall is right around the corner which means it's apple picking time at Carrigan Farms. The autumn activity begins Sept. 5. Mark your calendars and gather friends and family. (Subscription: Mooresville Tribune)
