Ankle Monitor Helps Police Nab Burglary Suspects In Dilworth

According to police, one of the suspects was wearing an electronic monitor and was taken into custody as they came out the back door.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A court-ordered ankle monitor helped Charlotte police nab two suspects they say were behind a string of residential breaking and enterings in Dilworth Monday.

According to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department report, officers responded Monday morning to two separate incidents of breaking and entering in the Dilworth neighborhood, reported on Mt. Vernon Avenue and Berkeley Avenue.

A resident at one of the homes came home while the suspects were in her home, and was able to give a description to officers, police said. “During this time frame, members from the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) notified officers they had a subject on Electronic Monitoring that was in close proximity to both locations,” CMPD said.

Officers tracked the suspect — identified as 22-year-old Robert Curd — with the ankle monitor to a third location, located on Isleworth Avenue.

There, officers spotted one of the men fitting the description given earlier by the resident climbing over a backyard fence and running from the scene. As officers established a perimeter, Curd also emerged from the back door of the home. He was taken into custody without incident.

The second suspect, who was later identified as Jameil Massey, 18, ran to Latta Park, where officers made contact with him near the entrance.

“While speaking with the suspect, they noticed his pants were ripped from climbing a fence post while he was fleeing from K9 officers,” CMPD said.

After he was positively identified, Massey was also taken into custody and taken in for questioning.

Curd and Massey were both charged with three counts each of breaking and entering, conspiracy to commit breaking and entering, and felony larceny after breaking and entering.

CMPD asks that anyone with additional information concerning these cases call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
