Record Number of Volunteers Expected for Pride Day Projects

Lorain County Pride Day is Saturday, May 19 and Avon is boasting record of volunteers this year.

and Recycling Coordinator Ellen Young said more than 75 volunteers have signed up to help spruce up the town on Pride Day. Pride Day traditionally sees residents and businesses sign up for projects that will enhance their city.  Projects will continue May 26 as well.

“Everyone who volunteers time or donates goods and services will be eligible to win wonderful prizes,” Young said.

Don’t expect the pride will end after May ends either.

“The is solidly involved with almost every effort from
the initial work with the volunteers, preparing locations and maintenance
after the work is done,” Young said.

May 19 projects:

• Electronics collection - This is a donation of time by Avon resident, Pete Polovich.  Twenty cents per pound of the recyclable material will be donated to a local food bank. The collection is at 35669 Detroit Rd. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Acceptable items for collection include: Computers, laptops, servers, battery back-ups, flat screen monitors, cables, wiring, computer accessories, CRT monitors, printers, small electronics, all phones (including cell phones).  Call Pete Polovich at (216) 701-4223 for information. More than 50 Girl Scouts (including adult leaders and family members) will be working at City Hall.  Thomson Gardens is supplying most of the flowers that will be planted here and in a few other locations in town. Kurtz Bros is donating soil for the City Hall effort and will also be working on a beautification project at Avon Isle Park (not sure what yet)

  Boy Scouts always volunteer for Pride Day and will be at City Hall and other locations throughout Avon. Sunbeam Gardens always donates flowers and manpower for the Boy Scouts' endeavors
  Avon Senior Center will have volunteers working to beautify their property. 
• The Avon Garden Club will be planting 2 large flowering pots at the
  Veterans' Memorial at the Avon Cemetery, located at Detroit Rd and State
  Route 83. Pinehaven Greenhouse is donating the plants for the Veterans'
  Memorial at Avon Cemetery. The Avon Garden Club will also do the landscaping at Heritage Memorial Park and the planters on the bridge over French Creek on Detroit Road
• The French Creek Development Association will be working (location TBA)
• At least 12 residents have contacted to Young to help out in the city.
• The Avon Goodwill, located at 825 Center Road, will give anyone who brings in a donation during the day on Saturday, May 19, a "Donor Dollar" coupon good for 15 percent off your next purchase at any one of their locations. The Donor Dollar expires on Aug. 19, 2012, and may only be used one time.

May 26 projects:

• Shredding Network will be in the City Hall parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to shred Avon residents' sensitive documents.

• Bryce Rapp, Bikepointe Ministries, will be at the Avon Northgate Park, 2155 Eaton Drive (off Colorado and Carleen) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. collecting old bikes to refurbish and donate to families who can't afford to purchase them.
