Redevelopment Of Avon Lake Generating Station To Start 'Immediately'
The acquisition of the former coal-fired power plant was completed this week.
AVON LAKE, OH — Charah Solutions completed its acquisition of the Avon Lake Generating Station this week.
The company will begin environmental remediation and the redevelopment of the property "immediately," officials said in a news release. The coal-fired plant stretches across the shores of Lake Erie and its sale to Charah was initiated in May 2021 but was not fully completely until Monday.
Charah, through a subsidiary group, acquired the 40-acre area and will be responsible for the shutdown and decommissioning of the coal power plant and for performing all environmental remediation and redevelopment of the site. The company believes its work in Avon Lake will reduce CO2 emissions by half a million tons.

“The closing of the power plant is an end of an era,” said Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka in a statement. “The plant provided jobs for residents over a span of almost 100 years. The plant also provided revenue for the city and schools in order to fund city services and educate thousands of students. We are looking ahead to a new era, and the potential for a bright future is within our grasp. We will make the most of this opportunity.”
