Scott Scarvelli Home From Hospital

Avon High freshman paralyzed in February motocross crash

Sheri Scarvelli's voice practically sang the words Thursday.

"He's home!"

Her son, 15-year-old Scott, came home for good Thursday from MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Scott had been in the hospital, except for a couple of overnight visits home, since Feb. 13, when he wrecked his bike while riding at RamJam Sportsplex in Lorain.

The crash injured Scott's T5 and T6 thoracic vertabrae, and he is now paralyzed from the chest down.

Since then, Scott has gone from not being able to sit up without a dangerous spike in blood pressure to being able to get about in a wheelchair. He was thrilled to be home Thursday, teasing his mother as they spent the early afternoon chatting at the kitchen table.

The community has rallied around the family, Sheri said. A tutor has helped Scott keep up in his classes at Avon High School, where he made the last marking period.

And at raised $500 for the family, said Moe's owner Andrea Graham.

The next challenge will be making the home, especially the bathroom, more accessible for Scott, Sheri said. They also hope to get him into a rehab program near Cincinnati called Sci-Step. The program is not covered by insurance.

But for now. she is just savoring having her son home.

"It's so wonderful," she said.
