Stay Safe in Summer's Heat

Avon Emergency Care Center doctor offers important advice

The short heat wave this week was a welcome break from the spring's gloom and rain, as well as a tantalizing early taste of summer.

It's also a reminder that hot can be uncomfortable, and unsafe.

Dr. Michael Summerfield, the medical director at , offered some tips for staying safe and healthy while enjoying summer.

  • Staying hydrated is essential. People lose more fluids in summer heat than they realize, Dr. Summerfield said. Water is good, and so are sports drinks with electrolytes like Gatorade or AllSport.
  • Dress for the weather. Think loose-fitting, light colors and breathable fibers like cotton and linen.
  • Timing is everything. Do outdoor work and exercise early in the morning or later in the evening. The sun and heat won't be as intense.
  • If you have central air conditioning, get it serviced now. Don't wait for something to go wrong, because you know it will on a super-hot day.
  • Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable to the effects of heat. Protect infants and toddlers from sun exposure and don't let them spend prolonged time in the heat. Keep them hydrated. Check on elderly relatives and neighbors regularly. Some older people, trying to save money on electric bills, resist turning on air conditioning.
  • If you've been sick lately, like with a stomach virus or upper respiratory infection, you may not be able to tolerate heat and humidity as well as when you're healthy. Don't push yourself.
  • Some medications, like diuretics, may decrease your tolerance to heat. Pay extra attention and stay hydrated.
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages may reduce your ability to realize you've been in the heat too long.
  • The best thing people can do, Dr. Summerfield said, is pay attention to their bodies. If you begin to feel fatigued, nauseated, lightheaded or dizzy while in the heat, immediately go to a cooler area. If the symptoms don't quickly resolve, you may need to seek medical attention.
