RTA Uppercut Driver, Passenger Criminally Charged

Both the RTA bus driver and the passenger who were involved in a dispute that was filmed and went viral online have been criminally charged for the incident.

Shidea Lane, 25, reportedly boarded an RTA #5 bus Sept. 18 without paying. A dispute began —which was recorded on a cell phone and later became a viral video — that ended in the notorious uppercut delivered by the angry bus driver.

Thursday Beachwood City Prosecutor Thomas Greve authorized criminal charges against both Lane and bus driver Artis Hughes.

Lane, 25, has been charged with disorderly conduct, a fourth-degree misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $250 fine.

Hughes, 59, has been charged with assault, a first-degree misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Both are expected to be booked today. Lane has a $125 bond and Hughes has a $525 bond.

Their arraignments are expected to be scheduled for the first week of November.
