From the Greater Columbus Sports Commission: 'This award is the Greater Columbus Sports Commission's way to honor individuals that elevate the community through sports. From coaches and athletes to volunteers, parents, officials and more, these Community Champions are making a difference both on and off the field. A new honoree is named each quarter.'

As described in her nomination story: Born and raised in the Cleveland area, Rachel moved to Westerville, Ohio in the early 1980s with her husband and two young sons. In 1999, Rachel's 18-year-old son, Brian, was murdered, and her family's lives were forever changed. Through her act of forgiveness, and wanting to bring good out of evil, Rachel and her family began The Brian Muha Memorial Foundation and in 2005, The Run the Race Club, and after-school center for inner-city children and young adults on Columbus' west side with programs like a food pantry, clothes, appliances distribution, sports and more.

Rachel describes her surprise and gratitude this way:

"A few weeks ago, I received a message from Amy North telling me she nominated me for a new award being given called The Columbus Sports Community Champion Award. Me? A sports award? I have to be the least likely person to receive such an award," said Rachel.

But Amy wrote: "Hi Rachel, I just wanted to let you know I nominated you as a Columbus Community Champion for the impact you have on the Racers. One of our initiatives is to use sports to elevate our community and the construction of the new Run The Race Center gym and establishing a place for the kids to play is exactly what we need more of in Columbus. The award is mainly for visibility and awareness - I want the community to know about all the good that is happening! No athleticism needed to make a difference.❤"

"Thank goodness," said Rachel.

"So sweet. Well, the voting has started. And if we are going to be in this, I want our Racers to win. So - if you can vote once every day (I know, remembering won't be easy) all of us at Run The Race will be very grateful."
