Local Student Receives National Recognition

Columbus resident selected as a College Board National Recognition Program awardee

Maleena Davies-Fyne, of Columbus, was recently awarded the National African American Recognition Award from the College Board National Recognition Program in recognition of her outstanding ACT and SAT scores as well as her excellence in the classroom where she earned a 4.0 grade point average.

Maleena is a senior at Ohio Connections Academy (OCA), a tuition-free, full-time public virtual school serving K-12 students throughout the state, where she has been attending since the start of her junior year. Maleena is the first Ohio Connections Academy student to ever receive this recognition from the College Board.

“I came to Ohio Connections Academy in search of a learning environment where I could work at my own pace and challenge myself with honors and advanced placement courses the school offers,” Maleena said. “While I did miss some of the opportunities in a traditional school, I believe attending OCA has taught me the skills and discipline to stay on track which will benefit me in college.”

Maleena is currently applying to various schools across the county but hopes to attend Harvard or another Ivy League school. She plans to study Biology/Biochemistry and later attend medical school in hopes to one day practice as an OB/GYN.

“The faculty and staff at Ohio Connections Academy are very proud of Maleena and this latest recognition. We are also proud that we could provide this outstanding student a learning environment that met her individual needs,” said Ohio Connections Academy Superintendent Marie Hanna. “For nearly 20 years our school has served students who needed a more individualized learning plan in an environment that engaged and challenged them and put them on a track to move on to the next phase of their lives, ready for success.”
