Census Bureau Releases New Data On Racial Groups In Fairlawn-Bath

The U.S. Census Bureau released more detailed statistics for Ohio from the 2010 Census, including new data for racial groups in Fairlawn and Bath.

The bureau says the new data offers a "new layer of detail" to the population and housing data released last year as part of the decennial population study.

The new data even drills down into city data, giving communities like Fairlawn and Bath a window into how different racial groups are living within our communities.

The Census data is a massive trove of information, so the plan here is to highlight some interesting facts gleamed from the data.

1. Fairlawn and Bath are largely white, with small amounts of diversity

Combined, there are roughly 17,200 people living in Fairlawn and Bath. Of those people, 15,233 describe themselves as white.

According to the Census, there are 239 Asians in Bath and 317 in Fairlawn. In Bath, 178 people describe themselves as Black and 820 in Fairlawn. The Hispanic population is the smallest in both communities: 118 in Bath, 168 in Fairlawn.

2. Minority populations are almost middle age

Fairlawn and Bath's largest and fastest growing minorities are blacks and Asians. However, the median age of these people is close to middle age.

The median ages of blacks in Bath are 34 and 37. The median ages of black in Fairlawn is 36 and 38. The median age of Asians in Bath is 46. The median age of Asians in Fairlawn is 35.

3. Hispanics have largest, most stable families; whites have smallest families

The average family size in Fairlawn and Bath is just over three, meaning the typical family structure is a husband, wife and one child under 18.

But the Census data shows that Fairlawn and Bath's Hispanic population has not only the largest families, but they moderately stable also, meaning the family is led by a married couple living together.

Nearly 78 percent of Hispanic families in Bath have husbands and wives living together. The percentage in Fairlawn is 35 percent, which is low. The race closes to three children that has a better stability rate is whites at 47 percent.

The average Hispanic family size is more than 3.4 in both communities, the largest of all races.

Black families have the lowest stability rate — with about 35 percent (Hispanics too, see above) in Fairlawn and 64 percent in Bath — of families with a husband and a wife living together.

White families are the smallest in both communities, with Bath at 2.95 and Fairlawn at 2.78.

4. Bath Asians and Fairlawn whites have highest home ownership rate; blacks in both communities have lowest

If you live in Fairlawn or Baht, chances are you own your home. But homeownership rates vary based on race.

About 97 percent of Bath Asians own their home, while the number dips in Fairlawn where 70 percent of whites (the highest of all races) own their home.

White households were close behind in Bath, percentage-wise, with 3,305 of 3,567 households owning their own home, or about 92 percent.

In Fairlawn, black and Hispanic households were the least likely to own their own homes. Homeownership rates are low, hovering around between 34 and 36 percent.

In Bath, the numbers are relatively high, with 84 percent of blacks, and 88 percent of Hispanics owning a home.

5. Hispanics are still a small group in Solon

While Hispanics represent a fast-growing minority across the nation, the number of people who describe themselves as hispanic in Fairlawn and Bath remains small.

There are only 118 people in Bath and 168 people in Fairlawn who label themselves Hispanic, and there are only 76 households (both communities combined) that contain Hispanic people.
