Fairlawn Reaches Tentative Agreement in Union Contracts; issues bonds for Village at St. Edwards
City council actions from Monday, Oct. 17.

announced Monday that tentative agreements have been reached with the International Association of and Teamsters unions for firefighters, paramedics and service department workers. Law director Edward Riegler said that the new contracts are two-year “rollovers” of previous agreements, with a wage re-opener in 2012 and 2013. The agreement is scheduled to be approved by council Nov. 7. The contracts will take effect in January.
Council also approved issuing two bonds to raise $12.2 million to refinance operating costs and debt for the assisted living and nursing home. Council President said the type of financing is called a conduit bond, a form of financing that allows non-profit agencies to borrow at lower rates. Investors also do not have to pay taxes on municipal bonds. The measure was passed 6-0 on an emergency.
