Small, private studios are the focus at Sola

Katie Wyatt was working at a large salon, but longed to start her own business.

That's a scary step, though -- and expensive.

She found her solution at Sola Salon Studios, a new Fairlawn business that allows stylists to run their own business without the risks or costs of owning a traditional salon.

"At first it seemed overwhelming," said Wyatt, whose business is called KT Hair Design. "But they (Sola management) help you with as little or as much as you want."

The 23 owners at the new Fairlawn location -- mainly hair stylists, with a massage therapist, nail technician and esthetician in the mix -- can rent their own small studios for about the cost of renting a chair at a conventional salon.

The studios come with a chair, shampoo bowl, cabinets and mirrors, and the rest is up to the new owner.

"You completely make your own design," Wyatt said.

The Fairlawn location at 3029 Smith Rd., in the Summit Plaza, opened about five weeks ago.

The owners can set their own hours with 24/7 access to the building. They handle their own reception services -- most use their cell phones for appointments with their clients -- and use phone attachments for credit card payments.

Wyatt said her clients appreciate the modern, quiet setting and the privacy.

"You don't have 12 people with blow dryers all around you," she said.

Sola Salon Studios was established in 2003 in Colorado and now has more than 70 locations in 20 states.
