School of Rock (and jazz, and cabaret) in Fairlawn

Grand opening is this weekend.

Fairlawn School of Music does have a similarity or two to the movie "School of Rock." Students who have honed their chops under the direction of co-owners Kurt Reed and his partners Ron Martin and Steve Eckert ended up on the stage of local battles of the bands.  One band even made it to the finals. But Reed said the school does more than train the next American Idol.

"Students become very comfortable memorizing, creating and preparing for a presentation," he said. "What can be learned from the stage crosses over to all areas of life.   The school holds its grand opening today from noon to 5 p.m. at 201 Cleveland Massillon Rd. Reed and his partners also own  Jam Session Music School in Kent.

Students who want to study and instrument or voice in rock, jazz or cabaret can try out a free consultation to make sure teacher and student are a good fit. Classes start at $25 per half hour. The school encourages students to commit to six hours every 12 weeks and to participate in a recital at the end of the term.
