Thomas R. Thompson Will Head Orthopaedic Surgery at Akron General

Thomas R. Thompson, MD will lead Akron General Health System's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Thompson has been with Akron General since 1986 and became a member of the Akron General Partners Physician Group in 1997. In addition to his new chairmanship role, he leads Thompson Orthopaedics at . He specializes in adult orthopaedics, joint replacement and extremity repair.
In 25 years at Akron General, Dr. Thompson has held numerous leadership roles. Currently, he is a member of Physician Leadership Council and Medical Council and is on the Board of Trustees for Akron General Partners. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Thompson completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic and a fellowship in arthritis surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Rose Arthritis Center in Denver, CO. He graduated from Brown University in Providence, RI, and received his medical degree from the St. Louis University School of Medicine.
Dr. Thompson is the recipient of numerous professional awards, including several “Teacher of the Year” honors. Just this year he received the Outstanding Volunteer Faculty Award in Orthopaedics from the Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine. He and his wife, Mary Basile Thompson, RN, live in Akron. They have one grown son, Ryan.
