Tips to Keep the Bugs at Bay
Expert advice on how to bug-proof your area, and prevent and treat mosquito bites.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency offers the following tips to keeping mosquitoes away:
- Remove their habitat, where they live and breed, by eliminating standing water. Mosquitoes often breed inside objects with standing water like rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers and toys.
- It’s encouraged to empty bird baths, fountains, wading pools and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy any habitats the insects might develop.
- If you have a swimming pool in your yard, keep the water treated and circulating.
How do you prevent those pesky mosquito bites?
- Use EPA-registered mosquito repellents and follow the directions on the label carefully.
- If there’s a mosquito disease warning in effect, stay inside during the evening hours.
- Replace your outdoor lights with yellow “bug” lights. While the yellow lights aren’t repellent, they do tend to attract fewer mosquitoes than ordinary lights.
- Check your screen windows and doors to see if they are bug tight.
