It is my pleasure to nominate Chris Lane as Copley High School’s February Athlete of the Month. Chris, a senior co-captain on the swim team, concluded a stellar high school athletic career by breaking multiple records in his specialty, the 100-yard breaststroke. In January, Chris broke the 20-year-old school record in the event, and in the final dual meet of the year in February, he broke a 10-year-old Simmons Natatorium pool record in a win over Orange High School, lowering his own school record in the process. Ten days later, Chris became the Sectional champion and lowered his school record yet again. At the District championships one week hence, he broke the one-minute barrier for the first time, breaking his record again, and finishing fifth in the Northeast District. His time qualified him for the State Championships, the first boy from Copley since 2008 to make the State meet. At State, the final weekend of February, Chris again broke his own record and qualified for the finals. All told, Chris dropped the existing school record in the breaststroke by an incredible 4.2 seconds while leading his undefeated team to the boys’ Suburban League swimming championship, the second in a row for the team.
Mr. Lane, however, is no one-trick pony; his 200 individual Medley time ranks third on Copley’s all-time list. This event requires a swimmer to swim all four competitive strokes in one event – a real test for a swimmer. Chris also maintains an excellent GPA and was honored earlier this year as Copley’s “Man of the Year”; the same week he accomplished the highest honor in scouting – Eagle. Chris Lane has truly had a terrific senior year and Copley High School career. I am honored to nominate Chris as February’s Athlete of the Month.
