Kent State Athletes Advised to Celebrate Year's End Responsibly

Athletics officials at are cautioning their roughly 425 student athletes to celebrate the end of the school year responsibly in light of a .

Todd Vatter, a spokesperson for Kent State Athletics, said this weekend is no different than others despite a call for "College Fest 2012 #2" near campus.

"This weekend is just another opportunity for our coaches and staff to reiterate to our student-athletes about their responsibilities to their team, coaches, staff and university — both on and off campus, in and out of season — and about expectations for proper behavior," Vatter said.

Last weekend, of the at College Fest a minority, 11, were students at Kent State.

None of the students arrested are on athletic teams, Vatter said.

Those students arrested last weekend or who are arrested this weekend will face a university hearing through the Kent State Office of Student Conduct following their charges in Portage County Municipal Court. If found responsible, each individual student could , suspension and/or dismissal, according to Kent State.

Vatter said student athletes will be treated no differently.

"All throughout the year we communicate with them that participating in college athletics is a privilege, not a right, and there will be ramifications for poor decisions," he said. "The university holds students to a certain code of conduct and our student-athletes are no different."
