Students get 'Cabin Fever' for Right to Read Week
Kent Parks and Recreation invites students to home of one of Ohio's first newspapers
The recently invited classes from to visit the department's 1808 historic log cabin in the neighboring Davey Arboretum to celebrate “Right to Read Week.”
The “Ohio Patriot” newspaper was first published in 1808 in the cabin and was one of Ohio’s first newspapers.
Twelve classes visited the cabin to learn about early Ohio printing, have quiet reading time and play pioneer games.
Cathy Ricks, from Kent Parks, shared stories and the history of the cabin. Miss Ward’s fifth grade class showed off their books in front of the cabin and had an opportunity to read and play in the loft. The cabin is located in Davey Arboretum on S.R. 43 across from headquarters.
