All at the Library: Body Heat; Meet the Author; and a Silent Movie Live

Lakewood Public Library is a place of action (and fun) this November.

It’s getting chilly outside, but things are just getting warmed up at the .

The fall season lineup, slated with a range of activities, gets started at 6 p.m. Saturday with a showing of .

For this series, Professor Terry Meehan has selected one title from each decade and will provide his own special features in the form of rare clips and original documentaries. The audience is invited to stay after the show to discuss each director's unique approach and trace it all the way back to Sam Spade sitting alone in the dark. The movie is rated R, so leave the little ones at home.

But there’s more. And this certainly isn’t your mother’s library.

“There is shushing going on in the library, but there’s also loud, joyous noise,” said library program coordinator Ben Burdick. “We’re trying to fill it with life. We’re trying to evolve the idea of what a library is.”

“We try to attract people and bring different audiences together and to break expectations people have of libraries. “

Without further ado, here’s some of the November lineup:

  • : (2 p.m. Nov. 6) — Elegance returns to grace the Library with another showcase of wonderful arias and exquisite scenes from famous operas by baroque, classical and romantic composers. Sunday with the Friends takes place nearly every Sunday at 2 p.m.
  • (7 p.m. Nov. 9) — Take a walk into the future, then get your book signed. Here’s a sample:  “Hello. This is the future. See our spaceships. See our moving sidewalks and silent cars. See our tallest, shiniest building and the bright blue sky that teeters upon its point. Walk in our quiet parks and observe the pretty, handsome people, the brightly colored birds living happily in cages built or evolved right into the trees.” This free event will be held in the Lakewood Public Library Main Auditorium.
  • : Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr. (7 p.m. Nov. 11) — Let’s go back in time! David Drazin is a nationally renowned pianist who specializes in the lost art of silent film accompaniment. You won’t find any sheet music and you won’t hear any ragtime. That’s because David is known for his live improvisation with jazz and blues over black and white. To put him to the test, the library will be screening Buster Keaton’s eye-popping comic masterpiece about a lovelorn projectionist who literally jumps in and out of the picture.
  • , Directed by Judd Apatow (6 p.m. Nov. 12) — Adam Sandler is dying. That may be good news to some of you, but perhaps you'll reconsider after his unflinching performance in this hilarious drama about the dysfunctional lives of people who are funny for money. Enjoy your favorite movies on the big screen with a big friendly crowd and the Lakewood Public Cinema.
  • (2 p.m. Nov. 13) — Noted blues guitarist Michael Bay has the pleasure of accompanying one of the great jazz voices in Cleveland—the inimitable Ki Allen. Her warm, clever phrasings will be a welcome addition to your humming repertoire for years to come.
