Civil War History Comes Alive at Lakewood Library

A woman ahead of her time, Mary Ann Shadd Cary took a step forward in time to visit the on Wednesday night.

Well, her message was shared.

Portrayed in a re-enactment by local actress Sherrie Tolliver, Shadd Cary was the first African American woman in North America to publish a newspaper: The Provincial Freeman. 

About 25 in attendance learned about her life story, and some of the great strides she took for African Americans — as well as women.
