Coffee with a Cop originated in California in 2011, according to the event's website. With shifting populations and a deluge of content on social media, police were looking for a way to re-establish a bond of trust between officers and the community.

The answer was simple: a cup of coffee. Eight years after the first Coffee with a Cop event, the program has spread throughout the U.S. and into Canada, Latin America, Europe, Australia and Africa.
