Kiwanis' Chicken and Ribs Fundraiser Set for Sunday
Fifth-annual event to benefit the club's initiatives in the community. It's also only 15 bucks.

Chicken and ribs never tasted so good.
Perhaps that’s because proceeds from the Lakewood Kiwanis Club’s fifth-annual Chicken and Rib Bar-B-Que will go back into the community.
The event — slated to take place at from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday afternoon — will feature live music and lots of food.

The cost of the community barbecue is $15, but that includes potato salad, baked beans, watermelon and drinks.
John Huetter, the assistant secretary for Lakewood Kiwanis, said more than 350 people are expected to attend. That estimate is based on the increase in attendance each year.

“Proceeds go to what all of what Kiwanis does,” he said, noting that none of the money goes toward the club’s operating costs. “We service the community and children — not only in our community but all over the world.”
“All of our income goes right back into the community and/or kids.”
That’s the reason, Huetter said, that the community has responded well to the event each year.
“We’ve been around for 90 years, and through those years, the support that Lakewood Kiwanis has given to the community has been outstanding. And I think people realize that.”
In addition to mouth-watering meat, provided by , there will be live music. The Top Hat Band, a local bluegrass band, will provide the tunes.
The event will take place at the appropriately named Kiwanis Pavilion at Lakewood Park — rain or shine.
“We’re hoping for good weather,” Huetter said. “You never know how (the weather) is going to be, but hopefully it’s not going to be too bad.”
