Lakewood Landmark Goes Up for Sale

A commodity plastics trading firm on Detroit Avenue has officially closed its doors in Lakewood — and the historic building that it occupied is for sale. 

The building that once housed the First Church of Christ Scientist at 15422 Detroit Avenue was most recently home to Maxxum Plastics.

But the property went up for sale last month, and Maxxum ceased operations in the city — and took at least a half-dozen jobs with it.

Maxxum President and CEO Alex Kowalski could not be reached for comment. However, according to court documents, the company may have ceased operations in Lakewood in 2009.

According to a 2008 tax assessment, the property and the building (constructed in 1922) are valued at $1.8 million.

The property — including the 23,000-square-foot building — is on the market for $2.5 million.

Dru Siley, the city’s assistant director of planning and development, said with a refinished interior, the building could be attractive for a business looking to open up shop in Lakewood.

“It’s a great location, on the western edge of downtown and near the and adjacent to new development projects,” he said. 

Siley was referring to the construction of across Detroit Avenue on the site of the abandoned St. Paul Lutheran Church, as well as the proposed redevelopment of Lakewood Plaza, which houses .
