Lakewood Loses an Old Friend

Oak tree on Ramona Avenue, estimated to be nearly 150 years old, taken down limb by limb.

An oak tree on Ramona Avenue, estimated to be nearly 150 years old, was cut down Thursday.

The tree — one of the oldest in the neighborhood — had been held together by a series of cables, and some neighbors worried that the tree could come down during a storm.

Neighbors walked up to get a last glimpse of the tree, which has provided decades of leaves and shade. The oak was no longer structurally sound and had begun to decay.
