First ladies are often presented to be the perfect wives and partners to the president. But many of their legacies as hostesses, fashion icons, and activists would look significantly different without the help of people behind the scenes. With a focus on African American women, this program explores the stories of The Women Behind the Women, highlighting Ona Judge, Martha Washington’s enslaved maid and Elizabeth Keckley, designer and seamstress for Mary Lincoln. This virtual program will be presented by the First Ladies National Historic Site.
