Here are the top three stories in Lakewood today:
- An iconic "Pizza Mural" has taken up residence in a new location in Lakewood, right next to Cleveland’s West Side. The original, Instagram-favorite Pizza Mural was located at the corner of West 28th Street and Church Avenue and was the creation of artist Mike Sobeck. However, due to restorations on the side of the building, the original mural had to go. Now, a new mural has been completed at 1384 Hird Avenue near the intersection of Detroit Avenue, which features a full pie and a three-dimensional slice. (News 5 Cleveland WEWS)
- Following the reversal of Roe v. Wade, Cuyahoga County has approved the use of stimulus funds to pay for out-of-state abortion travel. A portion of the county's American Rescue Plan Act dollars will go towards funding hotel rooms and other travel costs for residents seeking abortions out-of-state. The travel costs are part of a $475,000, bid-exempt contract, which will last until April 2025, that was approved Monday by the Cuyahoga County Board of Control with nonprofit think tank the Center for Community Solutions. - The body of a man who was discovered on the shore of Lake Erie in Lakewood on Saturday has been identified. The victim has been IDed as 38-year-old Adam J. Schwertner of Olmsted Falls. Schwertner was reported missing on Sep. 2. According to the office of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner and Lakewood police, he was discovered shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Sep. 10 on rocks behind a high-rise apartment on Lake Avenue, just west of Edgewater Drive.
