Snapshot: Construction of CVS Set to Begin
But first, the abandoned St. Paul Lutheran Church will be torn down.

Demolition of the abandoned St. Paul Lutheran Church on Detroit Avenue — and the construction of a CVS Pharmacy — is set to begin.
The stained-glass windows have been removed. The building is cleared. The practice drills with the Lakewood Fire Department completed.Â
The property — from 15501 to 15523 Detroit Avenue — will extend from Lakeland to Arthur avenues. The building adjacent to the church, which houses , will also be demolished — but not right away.

City officials have said it’s been difficult to find a reuse for the 107-year-old church, which has sat vacant for the past several years.
The multi-million-dollar project received the green light earlier this year from the city’s planning commission and the Architectural Board of Review.

In a letter to residents in the neighborhood, developer Sean McDermott said that the permits have all been granted.
"Construction will begin shortly," he said in the notice. "As with any construction, there are bound to be minor inconveniences during the project. Although, it is our goal to oversee a safe project and minimize disturbance to your neighborhood."
The store is expected to open by April 2012.
