Steel From World Trade Center Arrives in Lakewood

An 18-wheel semitrailer rumbled down Madison Avenue on Friday morning carrying two steel support beams that were once a part of the World Trade Center in New York City.

The beams will have new life as part of a memorial to honor fallen firefighters — victims of both the attacks of 9/11, as well as fallen Lakewood firefighters.

Seven Lakewood firefighters picked up the steel this week in New Jersey.

A ceremony was held at , with about 100 in attendance.

The memorial is expected to be completed by the 10^th anniversary of the attacks on 9/11.  A dedication ceremony is being planned for Sept. 11 to unveil the new memorial.

As a fundraising effort for the new memorial, the Lakewood Association of Fire Fighters — in cooperation with the city of Lakewood — will be selling authentic fire alarm boxes that were once used on Lakewood streets. 

There will be a very limited number of these fire boxes available to the public sold on a first-come, as-is basis.  The cost is $150. 

The boxes will be sold on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1, 14601 Madison Avenue.
