The Most Stolen Car in Lakewood in 2011 Is…

Hint: It's not a Honda.

One specific make and model was a favorite for car thieves in Lakewood in 2011.

Of the 91 vehicles reported stolen in the city last year, 15 were Chryslers — and nine of those were late-1990s model Dodge Caravans.

“You wouldn’t guess it,” said Chief Timothy Malley.

The second-most stolen vehicles in the city were seven Hondas — six of them Honda Accords.

That vehicle typically leads the nation each year as the most-stolen car.

In May, to residents about a pattern of stolen Chryslers in the city.

Besides the Caravan, the other Chryslers reported stolen in 2011 were Chrysler Sebring, Cirrus and Dodge Stratus models.

The vehicles were usually stolen during the cover of night, usually while parked on the street, Malley said in May.

"It would appear these are still easy types of vehicles to steal," said Malley. "Other than that I'm not sure why (there is) such a demand."  

There has been no area that has been specifically targeted, he added.

“Residents are reminded to keep their vehicles locked, parked in a well lighted area and all valuable objects removed from the car,” Malley said.
