Video: Lakewood Event Features 5K Race, Watermelon-Eating Contest and a Sprinkler Park
Extreme heat, and the threat of thunderstorms, doesn't keep crowds of Lakewoodites from annual street event.
A watermelon-eating contest was one of several attractions and activities at the on Saturday.
About  eight contestants shoveled in watermelon for a chance to win prizes — but bragging rights were also at stake.

There was a rock-climbing wall, food and live music.
But it was perhaps an elaborate sprinkler system, set up by Lakewood resident Michael Gill, that stole the show.

A series of hoses were hooked to a device — Gill called it "the water moose" — which attached to a nearby fire hydrant.
With temperatures in the 90s, children of all ages took advantage of the temporary sprinkler park.Â
A shower of another kind was headed right for Lakewood. Toward the end of the , the city was bombarded with a thunderstorm.
But that didn’t slow down runners who participated in the around the city, as part of the Lakewood Summer Meltdown.
