Work Begins on Sept. 11 Memorial in Lakewood

Using steel from the World Trade Center, the memorial is expected to be finished in time for the 10-year anniversary of the attacks.

Two beams that were in New York City will now be used as a memorial to honor firefighters who died on Sept. 11.

The memorial — to be built in front of on Madison Avenue — will be completed just in time for the tenth anniversary of the attacks.

Using ideas submitted by Lakewood High School art students, the plans show the two 12-foot beams rising in from a large concrete pad poured in a pentagonal shape.

Crews from the city have been working two clear the space for the future memorial. , a Lakewood-based architecture firm, volunteered to craft the plans.

Fire Marshal Tim Dunphy, who was  to pick up the steel, said an elaborate ceremony is set for Sept. 11 in front of the fire station.

“This project has taken on a life of its own,” he said. “This will be here for generations to come — long after we're gone."
