Richard Edelman has been named police chief, replacing Patrick Dearden, who retired on April 22.
Mayor Bruce Rinker said he reviewed work files of the three applicants and took into account his experience with them and the recommendation of the outgoing chief in deciding to appoint Edelman to the position.
"I wanted to make sure that people have confidence in the process," Rinker said. "This is a pretty small community and we want to make sure the change of command is smooth, especially with the two (applicants who were not appointed). These are all good people."
As a result of Edelman's promotion, vacancies were created that allowed the other applicants to be promoted. Paul Jablonski was promoted to lieutenant and Kathryn Troyer was promoted to sergeant.
Rinker said Edelman has served as acting chief in Dearden's absence and was particularly given additional duties in the past year.
"The thought is that the lieutenant then becomes chief. It's kind of like with the vice president, he takes over when the position in vacated," Rinker said. "The transition in that regard is much more seamless."
He added that the additional responsibilities given to Edelman in the past year has given an indication to how he will perform as chief.
"He's always been an exceptional officer," Rinker said.
