Hydrant Flushing Begins in Mayfield Village

Residents advised to run water longer, wash clothes later.

It's flushing time in Mayfield Village.

Fire officials have begun their annual hydrant flushing program as a part of the fire department's protection plan. Flushing will continue during business hours this week through Friday afternoon.

According to the department, the program aims to ensure proper operation and water flow of the hydrants. It will also give the department a chance to identify repairs or replacements that might be in order.

The primary effect on residents will be slightly discolored water for short periods of time, according to the Village website. Residents are advised to run faucets for several minutes until their water clears up.  Washing white clothes during flushing hours could also cause unwanted stains, so residents are also advised to do loads later in the day.

Fire officials will mark inoperable hydrants with a banner or tag, and a repair will be scheduled with the City of Cleveland's Division of Water. Fire hydrant painting and refinishing is also scheduled to begin this week.
