Four Proposed Charter Changes on Ballot in Highland Heights

Includes sixth try at increasing council terms from 2 to 4 years.

City Council voted Tuesday to approve four proposed charter amendments for the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

These include a proposed amendment to increase city council terms from two to four years. Voters rejected that idea in 1982, 1983, 1984, 2000 and 2005.

Two other proposals clarify language regarding qualifications for mayor and council. Members of the Charter Review Commission wanted wording to prohibit elected officials from holding any other employment with the city. The charter only states that they cannot be full-time employees.

The final proposed charter amendment would clarify language relating to executive powers of the mayor. Charter Review Commission members said one section of the charter did not indicate that mayoral appointments to the position of finance director must be approved by city council, as is the case with other directors. The change would put finance director under the same guidelines as other director positions.
