student Andrew Bieber fell short in his bid to qualify for the U.S. Open, finishing tied for 43rd place with a 6-over par score of 148 for 36 holes in a qualifying sectional at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, CA.
The first two sets of three players teed off at 6:50 a.m. PST Monday. Bieber started his 36 holes of qualifying play at 8:02 a.m. on hole 10 with fellow amateur Kevin Lim of Long Beach, CA, and Scott Clayton of San Bernardino, CA.
The 18-hole course at Oakmont Country Club is 6,861 yards long and par is 71. After four people withdrew, there were 90 golfers competing for five qualifying spots for the 111th U.S. Open, to be played in Bethesda, MD, from June 16-19.
Amateur Scott Pinckney of Scottsdale, AZ, and Matthew Edwards of Las Cruces, NM, tied for the top spot with a 5-under par score of 137. Other qualifiers were amateurs Beau Hossler of Racho Santa Margarita, CA, and Steven Irwin of Arvada, CA, (138) and Brian Locke of Los Angeles (139).
