Highland Heights Council Considering More Extensive Work on Park Entrance

Bids to be sought for chip and seal method and asphalt overlay

City Council decided to keep its options open and seek bids for two different ways to repair the entrance to .

Acknowledging that future work may be done to relocate the park's entrance, council members indicated at a committee meeting last week that they were leaning toward a "double chip and seal" method, with two layers of stone chips covered with a sealant top. Potholes would be patched before the layers of chips are added. Assistant Brian Mader said this approach will cost $95,000 for the entrance and another $45,000 for Woodside Road.

But council voted at Tuesday's meeting to also solicit bids for a four-inch layer of asphalt, which Mader had estimated would cost $175,000 to $200,000 for the entrance. The chip and seal approach was deemed adequate for Woodside Road, which is not heavily used.

Councilwoman Cathy Murphy said members of the Parks and Recreation Commission were not comfortable with doing just chip and seal work on the entrance.

"There was a lot of concern about that," she said.

Council President Scott Mills said that bids should be sought for both options.

"I'm curious to see how that would bid out also," he said.
