Highland Heights Has Money for Gazebo

City receives $90,000 in estate taxes

The receipt of $90,000 in estate taxes means has the money to pay for the gazebo and a backhoe, which both cost more than budgeted.

Councilman Leo Lombardo, chairman of the Legislative and Finance Committee, said at Tuesday's council meeting that the estate taxes will be used to pay for the gazebo and backhoe.

"We'll knock that budget up a bit so we can cover the gazebo," he said.

Council had budgeted $50,000 for the gazebo, planned for green space west of the municipal complex. However, site work is expected to cost about $46,000, while the structure itself will be another $35,000 – leaving the city $31,000 short.

The city had budgeted $35,000 for a backhoe that will be used by road repair crews in the summer and to load salt in the winter. Service Director Thom Evans said bids were sought and Southeastern Equipment in Mentor has a used backhoe for $41,750 after trade-in of a 1968 Ford tractor.

He said the equipment had belonged to Jefferson Village, which trades in every five years to get a new machine.
