Mayfield Heights Green Project Work Under Way

Rain garden, permeable concrete being installed

Visitors to City Hall are seeing a lot of activity lately – and may be having some trouble finding a parking space.

Parking lots behind the building and to the west are being paved with permeable concrete, which allows for improved management of water runoff. The project also includes a 2,000-square-foot rain garden in front of city hall that will serve as a showcase for collecting and using rainwater.

The entire $230,000 cost of the project is being paid for with a Surface Water Improvement Fund grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Work is being done by the Ohio Paving & Construction Co.

Mayor Gregory Costabile said that when the project is completed, it will show students how rainwater can be managed in a more efficient manner. He also hopes businesses will look at what was done and incorporate the ideas into their properties.

"It doesn't have to be such a concrete jungle that we see all the time," Costabile said at a recent city council meeting.
