Mayfield Heights Honors Retired Chief With Resolution

Michael J. Forte commended for 33 years of service with fire department

Michael J. Forte, who retired as fire chief on Sept. 9, was presented with a resolution at Monday's City Council meeting commending him for his service.

Forte was hired in 1978 and served 24 years as chief – the longest stretch of any full-time fire chief in the city's history.

Mayor Gregory Costabile said Forte was one of the first three paramedics on the fire department in 1982 and was the paramedic representative to Hillcrest Hospital until his retirement.

"I'm going to miss you as chief, more importantly as a friend," Costabile said.

Council President Michael Ballistrea said he had the utmost respect for Forte

"It's not always easy as a leader to be liked by the men you lead, men and/or women, I say that collectively, and as well as to earn their respect," he said. "And I think you've done that successfully for a number of years."

Forte thanked city officials and residents.

"I'd like to thank the mayor and all the council. I would like to thank Chief (Bruce) Elliot and all the members of the fire department that are here tonight. And, of course, the residents of this great city for the privilege for serving you for 33 years," he said.
