Mayfield Heights Road Repair Bid Comes in Under Estimate

Contract for $595,000 awarded to Barbicas Construction

After resizing the street repair program because of costs, this time got good news regarding bids. Barbicas Construction Company was the low bidder at $595,000, with the next-lowest bid at $690,000.

Back in April, the lowest bid received was $765,000 for a program that City Engineer Dave McCallops had estimated would cost $680,000. Rising gas prices were seen as a reason for the cost increase and the program was scaled back as a result.

Fulham Drive was removed from the list and the scope of work was reduced on Temple Avenue and Sunset Road. McCallops had revised the estimated cost to $700,000.

"We love when it comes in for less," Mayor Gregory Costabile said. "That's a good thing."

He said there were no plans to use the difference for additional road work.

Barbicas Construction had been awarded a city contract a few years back, but there was a mistake and the city went with another bidder, Costabile said. He said it had nothing to do with the quality of the company's work.

"It was how the bid package was put together," he said.
