Mayfield Soccer Team Loses Regional Final in Overtime
St. Ignatius wins 2-1 to reach state final four.
By Cristen Kane
The Mayfield boys soccer team accomplished two team goals this season but fell short of their ultimate goal to go to the state final four.
With a final record of 16-2-3, the Wildcats were District Champions for the fourth consecutive year (a school record) and made it to the Division 1 Regional Final for the first time since 1989. The Mayfield High School staff, students and entire community came out to support the Lads, as they are affectionately called by coach Sean McNamara.

The Mayfield Lads held the St. Ignatius soccer team for 82 minutes to lose 2-1 in sudden death overtime. St. Ignatius took the lead in the 35th minute on a corner kick served far post and headed in by Jacob Roth to make it a 1-0 match.
At the beginning of the first half, Mayfield senior captain Nick Kane served a through ball to senior captain Joey Wise but the ball went to the left of the post and missed the net.

In the 62nd minute The Lads made the game a 1-1 match when senior Yuta Umeda served the ball to the left side of the box to Joey Wise, who headed the ball into the net passed St. Ignatius goalie Brendan Cash.
In the final 58 seconds of the game, Mayfield had an opportunity unlike no other to score, but the shot by Nick Kane went slightly wide of the goalpost.
With a 1-1 tie match the game went into the 15 minute sudden death overtime. That is when Matt Foldesy from St. Ignatius scored the winning goal and the Mayfield Lads fell short of their State Final Four goal.
The Lads should be very proud of their accomplishments as they played with heart and soul all season to make it a season of memories for the 15 seniors on the team and all who enjoyed watching them play.
